Before highway alignment is finalized in Highway project, the engineering surveys are to be carried out.
The stages of engineering are:
(a) Map study :- Topographic maps are available from the survey of India with 15 to 30 meter contour intervals. Valley, ponds or lakes etc. can be avoided and approximate position of bridges etc. can be explained.
(b) Reconnaissance:- This is used to examine the general character of the area of deciding most feasible routes for detailed studies.
(c) Preliminary survey:- This is carried out to collect all the physical Information which is necessary in connection with the proposed highway alignment.
This work consist of:-
- Primary traverse
- Topographical features
- Levelling work
- Drainage studies & hydrological data
- Soil survey
- Material survey
- Determinations of final center line
- Final location and detailed survey:
The center line of road finalized is translatedon the ground during location survey.
Detailed survey is done to fix temporary benchmark and leveling work is used for drainage and
